Fort Edward by Bike

Cyclists and casual riders alike can enjoy Fort Edward by bike. For those journeying along the Empire State Trail, Fort Edward is a great place to stop for a meal, a beer, or a break with a view. The trail from Fort Edward to Fort Ann is one of the more expansive stretches of the trail that doesn’t require riding along cars and busy roads.

Explore Fort Edward by bike! The red line on the map below shows where the Empire State Trail weaves through Fort Edward. The trail head is identified by the red pin and includes parking and bike tools. From there you can head North to Fort Ann and South to Schuylerville.

Quite a bit of wind yesterday, but when you only have one day a week to ride, you can’t be too picky.

We decided to stay local for this ride (we still had bikes to work on, and the lawn was due for mowing) and followed the Empire State Trail / Champlain Canalway Trail from the shop to Fort Ann and back (if you’re planning to do this ride, parking is available just down the road at the Empire State Trail trailhead at Mullen Park). It’s about 12 miles each way and a mix of pavement, packed gravel/stone dust, and about 2.5 miles of dirt road on Towpath Road.

The condition of Towpath Road can vary depending on the time of year and how recently it has been graded. Yesterday we found it to be packed down hard with small potholes along the outsides of some stretches. It was mostly smooth with some dispersed gravel cover.

This route is easily rideable with most bike/tire setups, although if you’re running “skinny” 23-28 tires, Towpath Road may be a little more challenging and a higher risk for punctures.

On that note, if you’re riding bike trails/rail trails/gravel and are concerned about traction, puncture protection, and/or comfort - come see us. Something as simple as replacing your tires with a different size or tread pattern can drastically improve your rides. We have plenty of great options in stock and a lot more that we can order in.
